Accredited Learning Programme for young people. Recognising wider achievement.

Extension to JASS!

The Junior Award Scheme for Schools (JASS) has been extended to encompass young people from 5 to 13 years old. Working with educationalists from across Scotland, the programme has been adapted to suit younger ages. The extended programme is currently being evaluated across a small number of schools, with the results from this evaluation available in early 2018. The extended programme is available to purchase now.

JASS is an accredited programme designed to promote wider achievement across all four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence. Designed to support the transition from primary into secondary education, JASS increases pupils’ confidence, communication skills, and ability to work in a team that enables young people to become motivated learners, determined to succeed and contribute to their society. As an open and flexible award, JASS is achievable by all young people as they start on their vocational learning pathway.

By acknowledging wider achievement, JASS is utilised by schools to assist in closing the attainment gap. A recent evaluation showed that over two thirds of primary school pupils felt more confident and were able to work better as part of a team as a result of JASS, while all teachers surveyed noted a significant improvement in their pupils’ ability to communicate because of the programme.

Feedback received from customers showed that JASS lead to significant progress across all four capacities of the Curriculum for Excellence in 10 – 13 year olds, however no scheme existed for younger ages. With the support of Bonhill Primary school in East Dunbartonshire, FOTA took it upon themselves to expand the current programme. JASS resources have been adapted to allow children from 5 years upwards to complete the award. There are five new levels: White, Yellow, Red, Green and Blue, with an increasing level of commitment required at each new level. The extension is currently being evaluated across the UK, with the results from this expected in early 2018. While this evaluation is taking place, packs are being sold for a reduced price of £5 per pack (which includes postage costs to the UK). These are available to purchase by contacting FOTA directly.

Bob Hope, Chair of the FOTA Board of Trustees said:

“FOTA has been delighted with the success of Junior Award Scheme for Schools which has been well received by schools and youth groups throughout the UK and beyond. Initially targeted for 10 - 13 year olds we have extended the reach in response to demand from our customers.

With the support from staff and pupils at Bonhill Primary School, West Dunbartonshire we have developed JASS to make it accessible to younger age groups.   The new levels which are currently being piloted will allow the programme to be used by children and young people from 5 - 13 years providing an accredited learning pathway through primary and into secondary school.   Youth Clubs and Uniformed Organisations have also indicated their support for JASS as a framework for delivering their programmes and welcome this extension

Maria Sceery, Head Teacher at Bonhill Primary School noted:

JASS is a universal and inclusive programme which takes an holistic approach to developing our young people. JASS is a powerful medium for developing confidence, resilience and self-esteem in an engaging, motivational and rewarding way which ensures that every child achieves – and has this success celebrated. A key driver of the JASS programme is ensuring positive outcomes for our young people. This driver is also the aspirational aim of many child-centred policies of national and international governments.”
